the DSP's ultimate net coding gain with very low power dissipation.

ANAHEIM, CA--NTT Electronics (NEL), a leader in the integrated optical and electronic devices for the 100G and higher data rate optical communications, today announced the general availability of multi-functional high-performance 100G Optical Transport Network (OTN) Framer with very low power dissipation. The OTN Framer offers huge performance enhancement when operated in conjunction with NEL's flagship 100G Digital Coherent Signal Processor (DSP). The OTN Framer is fully compliant with ITU-T standard and is capable of operation in multiple modes including 100G Transponder, 10 x 10G Muxponder, and 100G Regenerator.

In order to address the network bandwidth demand from exponential growth in Internet traffic, carriers are deploying coherent 100G transport systems. Coherent technology delivers the scalability and flexibility needed for transmitting high data rate signals over fiber optic networks. A DSP plays a very important role in 100G deployments as it provides Chromatic Dispersion (CD) compensation and Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) compensation without using expensive optical devices. In addition, for efficient transmission, a 100G line card also includes an OTN Framer, which offers the standard overhead processing and client monitoring functions. It also provides additional net coding gain in conjunction with the Soft-Decision (SD) Forward Error Correction (FEC) in DSP to enhance the Optical Signal-to-Noise Ratio (OSNR) margin. Availability of the OTN Framer with enhanced performance and lower power dissipation is critical for wide scale adoptability and rapid deployment of 100G.

NEL's new OTN Framer employs advanced CMOS technology to provide framing solutions, fully compliant with the ITU-T G.709 standard, with unprecedented low power dissipation in the 10 W to 20 W range depending on the selected mode of operation. The lower power dissipation coupled with high performance enhances the industry state-of-the art by a wide margin and is highly attractive for multiple applications in optical networking equipment.

The new OTN Framer incorporates high-performance Hard-Decision (HD) FEC within a standard 7% OTN overhead. It supports a unique Enhanced FEC, in addition to the Standard GFEC, to provide the improved net coding gain by more than 3 dB. The OTN Framer achieves ultimate performance of the SD-FEC when operated in conjunction with NEL's flagship 100G DSP.

The availability of the new chip is an important milestone in the 100G Coherent ecosystem. The chip supports standard functions of overhead processing and client monitoring, and offers the industry, for the first time, a single-chip OTN solution for all the three modes of operation, Transponder for 100G Ethernet, 10 x 10G Muxponder for any client combination of Ethernet/SDH/OTN, and Regenerator for 100G OTU4.

“Today, NEL announced that it is starting shipments of the 100G OTN Framer, providing a single-chip solution for practically all the 100G line-card applications with unprecedented typical low power dissipation between 10 W to 20 W, which is a huge power savings compared to the available industry solutions, enabling OEMs to maximize the number of 100G slots per system,” said Dr. Haruhiko Ichino, NEL Vice President, General Manger of Electronics Device & Systems.

Availability of NEL's DSP and Framer devices are truly a game changer for the industry as it not only enables lower cost 100G solutions for the long haul systems, commensurate with the ITU-T standard, but it also enables the carriers to deploy interoperable high density 100G solutions in their networks. “This is a huge step forward which will accelerate large scale deployment of 100G,” said Dr. Masahito Tomizawa, Group Leader of Photonic Transmission Systems R & D at NTT.
