EBU expands its HD capacity for Olympics with NTT Electronics
May 30, 2008

NTT Electronics Corporation (hereafter, NTT Electronics, Tomoyuki Tojima, President, headquartered in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward), which has developed a variety of video compression technologies, is pleased to announce the delivery of its HDTV MPEG-2 Encoder HE5100 to European Broadcasting Union (hereafter, EBU, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland), the largest association of national broadcasters in the world. EBU is using NTT Electronics' HE5100 to expand HD capacity on its contribution network. This MPEG-2 contribution equipment will allow EBU to meet the increasing demand for HD content.

NTT Electronics' encoders will be used for live coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games, when demand for high quality images will be increased. They also will be used for many sports events like Euro2008(*1), Tour de France(*2), Roland Garros(*3), and Wimbledon(*4).
EBU was looking for equipment offering reliability, high quality, and interoperability-strengths of HE5100. Additionally, these encoders support both SD and HD formats, which gives EBU much more flexibility than before and gives viewers a spectacular experience.

The HE5100, delivered to EBU, incorporates the internally-developed single-chip MPEG-2 codec LSI to realize high image quality in a compact unit. It supports both SDTV signals (576i/512i/480i) and HDTV signals (1080p/1080i/720p).
