NTT Electronics Full HD H.264 Encoder/Decoder Selected as the Codec for CCTV's HD Coverage of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
June 10, 2010

NTT Electronics Corporation's HV9100 Series AVC/H.264 HDTV/SDTV encoder/decoder was selected by CCTV (China Central Television), a state-owned television station in the People’s Republic of China, as codec equipment used for HD coverage of the Vancouver Winter Olympics held in February 2010.

The video images of the Vancouver Olympics broadcast by CCTV throughout China were compressed by HVE9100 encoders installed at the International Broadcast Center, transmitted to CCTV in Beijing over fiber optic cables, and decompressed by HVD9100 decoders there.

“NTT Electronics' codec products were selected by many broadcasting stations for the Beijing 2008 Olympics and were highly thought of for the quality of images they produced,” said CCTV. “Based on that reputation, we selected the NTT Electronics HV9100 Series for our coverage of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. The HV9100 Series, which offers both high video quality and low latency, enabled us to broadcast the real excitement of the competition among the athletes in Vancouver. We will continue to use the HV9100 Series for international sports coverage.”

“The Beijing Olympics of 2008 were the catalyst for full-scale digital terrestrial broadcasting in China. In 2009, about 10 local stations started HDTV broadcasting in addition to CCTV,” said Tomio Kishimoto, General Manager of the Sales and Marketing Group of NTT Electronics. “International sports events are popular HDTV programs in China, too. Our codec technology, which has proved itself on numerous occasions such as the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and MLB (the U.S. Major League Baseball) programs in 2009, can meet viewers' needs for HD sports coverage. We will continue to lead the improvement of the picture quality of HDTV broadcasts in China and elsewhere around the world.”

HV9100 Series

The HV9100 Series (encoder: HVE9100, decoder: HVD9100) supports both HD (1080i/720p) and SD (480i/576i). It also supports, optionally, up to 16ch PCM audio input and output, as well as an IP interface. The HV9100 Series gained a great deal of attention right after its release in January 2008, and has already been selected by many broadcasting stations as the codec for distribution and contribution applications in Japan, North America, Europe, Australia, Asia and Brazil.
