IABM Design & Innovation Awards WinnerYOKOHAMA, Japan October 15, 2014 — NTT Electronics’ NA8000 has been awarded as the winner of the Content & Communication Infrastructure category of the IABM Design & Innovation Awards. The awards’ winners of each category were unveiled at the ceremony held on 13 September during the IBC in Amsterdam. This award celebrates those solutions that offer significant benefits or new opportunities to the broadcast and media industry and recognize achievements across nine different segments. The winning entries were judged and awarded by a panel of 22 independent specialists chaired by John Ive, Director of Business Development and Technology, IABM.

Award Ceremony

NTT Electronics’ award entry was based on its NA8000 offering an IP Gateway with a superior error correction algorithm FireFort®-LDGM FEC, which is categorized as LDGM FEC(Low Density Generator Matrix Forward Error Correction). It will be a part of MPEG-H, ISO/IEC23008-10. NTT Network Innovation Laboratories has been involved in the technological development and standardization. At the ceremony the judges’ comment was quoted, “The winner's focus on error correction is important to enable the use of real world IP networks, consequent to cost savings. Easy implementation in the existing workflow is an enabler for more efficient and robust content streaming.”

Hisashi Kasahara, General Manager of the Digital Video & Systems Business Group of NTT Electronics said,  “We are very pleased to know our product has been highly evaluated by 22 judges of high professional standings. We consider this award as a fruit of the advanced and internationally standardized technology LDGM FEC developed by NTT Innovation Laboratories, as well as our superior hardware development capability. One of the biggest themes for IBC2014 was high quality video transmission over more reachable IP networks. NTT Group will continue to lead this field by technical and commercial development.”

About NA8000 :

NA8000 is the answer to the growing demand of cost saving video transmission over IP network. It incorporates efficient and robust FEC algorithm as described below. This means that one can utilize relatively economical unmanaged IP network, which is best-effort and unstable service, for robust transmission. Broadcasters and video service providers will handle more UHDTV(Ultra High Definition Television) contents in the near future, and it helps saving OPEX especially in such cases.

In addition, NA8000 is a ‘plug and play’ solution which supports industry standard interfaces such as ASI and Gigabit Ethernet and all you have to do is add NA8000 at entry and exit points of your current network boundary. Configuring NA8000 itself is again very simple as well; basic IP addresses information for destination/origin and some FEC-related parameters if you’d like to make most out of NA8000 to balance the strength of FEC and latency.

About FireFort®-LDGM FEC :

NTT Network Innovation Laboratories has been evolving LDGM FEC as FireFort®-LDGM FEC that enables the robust data transmission using the packet based networks such as IP, under the condition which packet loss occurs frequently due to the network congestion. FireFort®-LDGM FEC was designed based on LDGM FEC code to enhance robustness and reduce calculation cost, even when a large block size FEC is required to protect data against large burst packet losses. FireFort®-LDGM FEC realizes extremely high robustness compared with popular algorithm like Pro-MPEG FEC. In addition, it can be widely applied to low-resolution video to extra-high resolution 8K video, low-power devices such as smartphones to high quality CODECs. Currently, NTT is involved in the standardization of MMT (MPEG Media Transport) which plans to include FireFort®-LDGM FEC.
