NTT Electronics (NEL) announces industry's first high performance 100G ROSA Products
High performance 100G APD ROSA can enable cost-effective and small pluggable transceivers with extended reach close to 40km March 10, 2014
NTT Electronics (NEL), a leader in the integrated optical and electronic component technology for the 100G and higher data rate optical communications, today announced availability of high performance 100G ROSA products for client optical interfaces. The ROSA products consists of both PIN and APD devices and provide high performance. The APD ROSA, particularly, offers cost effective solution for the NRZ 25G optical tributary signal with lower power dissipation.
In order to address the network bandwidth demand from exponential growth in internet traffic, carriers are deploying coherent 100G transport systems. In addition, data center networks are continuing to grow in size requiring longer reach cost-effective optics at higher data rates. Extending the reach of such 100G links to longer than 10km with low power dissipation is essential for the future generation datacenter and related networks. Components for smaller pluggable form factors like CFP2 and CFP4 are critical for the rapid deployment of next generation 100G networks.
“Today, NEL announced the availability of APD ROSA devices with very high performance which offer significant advantages by reducing the size and power dissipation of 4x25G transceivers particularly for 10km and longer reach applications close to 40km,” said Mr. Hagimoto, President of NTT Electronics. The ROSA device will be a key enabler of the next generation networks.
“Availability of NEL’s APD ROSA devices is an important development for the industry which will enable compact, low power, extended reach 100G solutions for large scale network deployment. A key advantage over existing solutions is compatibility with cost effective, directly modulated laser transmitters,” said Chris Cole, Director of Transceiver Engineering at Finisar.
APD receiver implementation eliminates the need for the SOA pre-amplifier thereby reduces the power dissipation and size requirements. The higher sensitivity of APD devices opens possibility of longer reach without additional amplification. These benefits realize assembly of high data rate 4x25G transceivers with smaller form factor for longer reach application. This is currently a subject of study for a standard at ITU-T SG15 for a new OTU4 application code to Rec. G.959.1 corresponding to a nominal 40km, NRZ 25G, 100G OTN IrDI application including FEC.
